“Happy New Year!” (By: Courtney Grimes, LCSW)

“Next year I promise to…”

“My new year’s resolutions are…”

“January is when I will finally…”

Any of these sound familiar? Most of us make a list of resolutions around this time of year; promises to be better, hope to feel better – just some type of insurance that this next trip around the sun will be okay.

These contracts we make with ourselves are exactly that – contracts. Sometimes contracts are broken, or they expire. Sometimes commitments are made with the best of intentions but lack what is needed for true sustainability. I have made new year’s resolutions time and time again, only to feel disappointed in myself when I fail to keep them. What a set-up!

I would like to propose something radical. DO NOT MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS! Instead, what if we all committed to our hearts, minds and bodies right now? What if we committed to take care ourselves, be kind to ourselves – always!

My challenge is this: resolve to listen to your heart, mind and body and respond with compassion! Commit to yourself – always! Starting now…
