“Holiday Tips” (By: Courtney Grimes, LCSW)
As Christmas and New Years quickly approach, don’t forget our holiday “Tip List”:
1. You come first! Make sure your needs are met.
2. Create a plan, stick to the plan. The more structure you can give yourself, the better.
3. Ask for help. You are not alone in this!
4. Gratitude. Try to list one thing each day for which you are grateful.
And here is a crazy idea for the new year – what if you DIDN’T make any resolutions??
So often we can set ourselves up to feel bad, by creating New Year “to-do” lists.
“New year, new me!”
“This year, I will get it right!”
“I get to start over!”
Sadly, this can begin to mimic the binge/restrict mindset. How many of us have binged until the end of a day, with the full intention of waking up tomorrow to “start over, get it right, or stick to your restriction plan?”
Instead, what if January 1st is simply the next day in your life? The next day in your journey towards recovery? We are ALL works in continuous progress – there is no start/stop. So instead of making resolutions, what if we make promises to ourselves that we will continue to get up every day and do our best, and stay open to the beautiful possibility that a new year can bring?
Remember: There is no destination. It’s ALL journey. HAPPY, HEALTHY HOLIDAYS to you and yours!!
