“Tips For Getting Through The New Years Diet Talk” (By: Blair Thompson, RD)
January is the month where everyone seems to be talking about the diet they are on or some kind of weight loss plan. The talk about diets can be harmful for those of us who are in recovery, so here are some tips on how to stick to your recovery through this diet talk season:
- Most of the time, we see people posting pictures and posts about their diet/weight loss goals on social media. Delete, “mute” these people on your social media or unfollow them.
- Surround yourself with people who align with your values. If you can, go to support group meetings, these are usually free. You can also volunteer with different eating disorder organizations, this way you can immerse yourself into a world of like minded people.
- We also hear diet talk at work all the time! This is where you can choose to walk away or set boundaries.
- If you are still struggling, ask for help. Find a trained eating disorder therapist or dietitian in your area to help you stick to your recovery. Sometimes therapists and dietitians offer virtual sessions, and you can talk to them from the comfort of your home.
Lastly, it is okay to set boundaries with your family, friends or even coworkers. Through therapy you can learn how to set healthy boundaries with people and we can learn to build resilience towards diet culture.
